A snow storm caused massive power outages and they include: nearly 750,000 customers still without power in Connecticut; nearly 525,000 in Massachusetts; more than 360,000 in  New Jersey; around 220,000 in Pennsylvania; about 128,000 in New York; just over 200,000 in New Hampshire; about 21,000 in Maine and about 1,700 in Rhode Island.

Devastation from the rare and deadly October snowstorm haunted the Northeast on Monday, leaving 2.2 million households without power, canceling schools, postponing Halloween fun and snarling the morning commute.

The storm that raged from West Virginia to Maine ended late Sunday and was blamed for at least eight deaths, most of them on slippery roads, some barricaded to steer traffic away from downed trees and live power lines.

Ghost and goblin decorations were blanketed with record-breaking snow, the heaviest 32 inches measured in the Western Massachusetts town of Peru, according to the National Weather Service.

Just 45 minutes northwest of New York City, in West Milford, New Jersey, 19 inches of snow fell.

Despite sunny weather on Monday, suspensions remained in effect on several New Jersey Transit train lines into New York City.

Connecticut Governor Dannel Malloy said 100 state roads were closed and about 200 more partially closed.

Across the Northeast more than 2.2 million customers remained without power on Monday morning.

“What a storm, my power is still out!” said a Monday morning Twitter post from U.S. Senator Scott Brown about his Wrentham, Massachusetts home.

Connecticut was particularly hard-hit and Malloy called the power outages in his state the worst in history.

He said roughly 8,000 United Illuminating Company customers without power should be restored by the end of Monday.

Once that restoration is complete, the company said it will release crews to assist CL&P with restoration efforts in other parts of the state where around 740,000 customers were still without power.

In New Jersey, PSE&G was relying on help from utility crews traveling from Alabama, Georgia and Mississippi to help restore power to some of their thousands of customers who were out.

Snow days, usually not tapped until at least after Thanksgiving, were declared by scores of public schools that remained shut throughout the Northeast.

While schoolchildren were delighted with the surprise long weekend, their parents were advised to adjust Halloween trick-or-treat routines to end at dark and include an adult to watch for dangerous live wires.

In Worcester, Massachusetts, the city asked parents, schools and neighbors to postpone Halloween celebrations until Thursday when the weather was expected to be warmer and downed trees and power lines would likely be cleared.

The New Hampshire communities of Manchester and Nashua also put off trick or treating, rescheduling the annual candy collection until Sunday, November 6.

Cyndy Short, the former attorney for the parents of missing 11-month-old Lisa Irwin vowed on Sunday to keep looking for the child, even though the attorney is no longer on the case.

Cyndy Short had announced Friday she stopped representing Lisa’s parents Jeremy Irwin and Deborah Bradley, but she told the media in a brief news release Sunday she and her law firm “will continue to search for Baby Lisa as concerned citizens.”

They vowed to turn over every rock, every piece of dirt & every house or building until the infant is found.

Short said she would hold a press conference on Monday morning at her Kansas City office, though she gave no specifics on what she would discuss.

Short had been brought into the case to work with prominent New York defense lawyer Joe Tacopina. That association ended Friday, the same day an interview scheduled with Lisa’s brothers, ages 5 and 8, was canceled, along with a press conference Short scheduled on the case.

Tacopina has not responded to an email seeking comment on why Short is no longer working with the Irwin family. Short has also not commented on that.

Lisa has been missing since the night of October 3, when Bradley said she put her to bed in her crib. Jeremy Irwin said he came home about 4 a.m., found the lights on, doors unlocked, Lisa’s bedroom window open and her missing, along with three cell phones.

Police interviewed the couple extensively soon after the disappearance but not recently. They are seeking to interview them again, separately, but have not identified them as suspects in the case.

Meanwhile, several people showed up at the Irwin house on Sunday afternoon to do their own search for Lisa or any clues. One, Joe Robinson, searched a wooded area along a parkway near the Irwin home, which he did not believe police searched.

Another volunteer, Edith Fine-Duskin, said the family asked her to look for the cell phones or any of the clothing Lisa wore that night. She said her own daughter, age 11, was killed in 2003 by a hit-and-run driver who was never caught.

Fine-Duskin has done previous searches for Irwin and attends nightly prayer vigils on the front lawn of the Irwin home.

Lawyers for a Northland couple pushed back hard against police Thursday for saying their clients have stopped cooperating in the search for their missing 11-month-old daughter.

Police also have pushed Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin unreasonably for a confession, their lawyers contend.

“To (police), refusing to cooperate means not wanting to sign a confession,” said Sean O’Brien, one of the attorneys.

“That’s ridiculous,” said police spokesman Steve Young. Officers merely want to get the truth and a fresh interview with the couple would be a good start, he said.

In an interview with The Star, O’Brien and attorney Cyndy Short said they have begun to set boundaries for how Bradley and Irwin deal with investigators.

But they said the parents still answer questions from investigators and are prepared to continue cooperating.

Short is local counsel for New York attorney Joseph Tacopina, and O’Brien works with the Innocence Project at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Just two days after Lisa Irwin disappeared from her Northland home on Oct. 4, a police spokesman announced that her parents had stopped cooperating with investigators. The family then released a statement to reporters disputing that.

Since then, police and the family and its attorneys have sparred over what constitutes cooperation.

Short, a veteran criminal defense lawyer, said Bradley and Irwin have continued to have regular and productive contact with investigators, have permitted numerous searches of their property and have willingly provided DNA, fingerprint and hair samples to investigators.

They stand ready to do more for police, said Short, who is working on the case pro bono.

“We’ve told them, if you need anything we can provide it,” Short said.

Police spokesman Young responded that the last time the couple consented to an “unrestricted” interview was Oct. 8.

“What we need from them, and what we are not getting, is for them to sit down with our detectives and get answers to the questions we need answered,” Young said.

O’Brien, a law professor who briefly represented the couple during the Oct. 8 interview, said Bradley and Irwin’s strained relationship with police stems, in part, from investigators’ pursuit of them as suspects. Police also have not kept the family informed about the search for Lisa, which has been a strain on the family, he said.

“They read the newspaper to hear about progress in the investigation,” O’Brien said.

He said police clearly have concluded that Bradley and Irwin know more than they’ve told about Lisa’s disappearance.

During the Oct. 8 interview, O’Brien said, police advanced theories that perhaps Lisa had died in a simple accident at the home, or that one of the parents had shaken the baby to death in a fit of irritation or anger.

“I’m sure if I wouldn’t have been there, it would have been more heavy-handed,” O’Brien said.

Young rejected O’Brien’s suggestion that investigators pushed unreasonably for a confession.

“I’m sure all reasonable people understand that finding out what the parents in the home know is a crucial step in finding the girl,” Young said.

The couple also receives five or six calls a day from investigators, said Short, who estimated that Bradley and Irwin each have spent about 40 hours answering police questions since Lisa disappeared.

Young acknowledged that the parents have been helpful.

“They’ve done other things, but when I say we’re not getting full cooperation, I’m saying we’re not getting what we need,” Young said.

The family was particularly perplexed by the need for investigators to obtain a warrant to search the family home on Wednesday. Weeks ago, Short said, Bradley and Irwin gave police permission to do anything they wanted at the house.

Short said she was told that officers wanted to use “more invasive procedures” at the house. Media reports had investigators hauling off carpet and using a portable X-ray machine to study the walls.

“There was no reason to use the search warrants,” Short said. “The only reason they did it was to isolate (Bradley and Irwin) and present an image in the community that was unfair and inaccurate.”

Short said she and the couple are weighing a request from police for a new interview with detectives and are considering the terms under which they might agree.

Young said the terms are clear and on the table.

“We’re talking about sitting down with our detectives separately … to learn the things that only the adults, only the parents of this child, might know,” Young said.

Lawyers for a Northland couple pushed back hard against police Thursday for saying their clients have stopped cooperating in the search for their missing 11-month-old daughter.

Police also have pushed Deborah Bradley and Jeremy Irwin unreasonably for a confession, their lawyers contend.

“To (police), refusing to cooperate means not wanting to sign a confession,” said Sean O’Brien, one of the attorneys.

“That’s ridiculous,” said police spokesman Steve Young. Officers merely want to get the truth and a fresh interview with the couple would be a good start, he said.

In an interview with The Star, O’Brien and attorney Cyndy Short said they have begun to set boundaries for how Bradley and Irwin deal with investigators.

But they said the parents still answer questions from investigators and are prepared to continue cooperating.

Short is local counsel for New York attorney Joseph Tacopina, and O’Brien works with the Innocence Project at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Just two days after Lisa Irwin disappeared from her Northland home on Oct. 4, a police spokesman announced that her parents had stopped cooperating with investigators. The family then released a statement to reporters disputing that.

Since then, police and the family and its attorneys have sparred over what constitutes cooperation.

Short, a veteran criminal defense lawyer, said Bradley and Irwin have continued to have regular and productive contact with investigators, have permitted numerous searches of their property and have willingly provided DNA, fingerprint and hair samples to investigators.

They stand ready to do more for police, said Short, who is working on the case pro bono.

“We’ve told them, if you need anything we can provide it,” Short said.

Police spokesman Young responded that the last time the couple consented to an “unrestricted” interview was Oct. 8.

“What we need from them, and what we are not getting, is for them to sit down with our detectives and get answers to the questions we need answered,” Young said.

O’Brien, a law professor who briefly represented the couple during the Oct. 8 interview, said Bradley and Irwin’s strained relationship with police stems, in part, from investigators’ pursuit of them as suspects. Police also have not kept the family informed about the search for Lisa, which has been a strain on the family, he said.

“They read the newspaper to hear about progress in the investigation,” O’Brien said.

He said police clearly have concluded that Bradley and Irwin know more than they’ve told about Lisa’s disappearance.

During the Oct. 8 interview, O’Brien said, police advanced theories that perhaps Lisa had died in a simple accident at the home, or that one of the parents had shaken the baby to death in a fit of irritation or anger.

“I’m sure if I wouldn’t have been there, it would have been more heavy-handed,” O’Brien said.

Young rejected O’Brien’s suggestion that investigators pushed unreasonably for a confession.

“I’m sure all reasonable people understand that finding out what the parents in the home know is a crucial step in finding the girl,” Young said.

The parents of missing baby Lisa Irwin have cancelled plans for a police specialist to interview their two sons.

Police said that the interviews were called off at the request of Jeremy Irwin and Debbie Bradley’s New York attorney, Joe Tacopina, reports KCTV.

The 5-and-8-year-old boys last spoke to the police on Oct. 4, just hours after Irwin called 911 at about 4 a.m. to say someone had snatched his sleeping daughter from the crib of their home. They had been scheduled to see a child interview specialist today.

Police have said they needed the two boys to answer questions about what they saw and heard in the hours in which their sister went missing from more than three weeks ago.

The specialist had also planned to take a DNA sample from the boys to test against evidence collected at the Irwin’s home.

Darin Snapp, spokesman for the Kansas City Police Department, said that Tacopina did not give a reason for the cancellation. Tacopina indicated that the interviews would be rescheduled for next week and police hope that occurs, Snapp said.

Yesterday, a Kansas City area attorney for the couple called off a news conference and a tour of their home. Kansas City police also helped lead a two-hour search of a nearby pond Thursday, but turned up nothing.

Bradley has said she expects to be arrested in connection with the disappearance of her daughter.

No suspects have been identified publicly by police.
